A Global Vision, A Global Story
Before Listen for Life was founded in 1998, the world was losing music cultures at the rate of five per year! While endeavoring to record/film those cultures and sustain the musicians, we discovered other ways that their music could help to heal, educate and inspire the planet, so we created outreach projects that share their gifts with the world. We invite you to learn more about all those projects, elsewhere on this site.

Saving Cultural MusicIn the late 1990’s, Donna Stoering, our Founder/Artistic Director, was touring the world as an Artistic Ambassador for both the UK and the USA when she was approached by musicians, music listeners, network producers and media viewers around the globe, all pleading for a way to “save” their music.
Listen to a few of the hundreds of these pleas and production offers: Netherlands “My friends and I grew up getting our music through MTV but we’ve totally outgrown the content. We saw your program on our national network last night and would love to watch more – even with the emerging new content platforms, full-screen broadcast video is still exciting. When can you launch a channel here in our country? It will be a huge hit, so we’re glad to see you here in our media studios!” India “We love your imaginative program ideas and we are aware that parents here do not want their children to grow up knowing music as only that which comes out of Bollywood, when we have such tremendous traditions and riches within Indian classical music as well. We would like to offer you an interactive music TV channel here for an initial 16 million viewers in India” Ghana “My fellow musicians and I are giving up. Our children think that only what they see on TV is of value, so if their own culture is not represented there, they are not interested in continuing its traditions or music. So for the first time in our culture’s history, our villages contain a variety of music instruments that no one alive knows how to play. ” Hong Kong “We surveyed millions of viewers of our satellite network and learned they are craving more music programming on our broadcast schedules – that’s why we invited you here. Children are learning Western classical music in school, and their parents would like to develop an appreciation for these Western music styles, while the grandparents fear that the younger generations are losing all touch with their Asian Classical traditions and musical heritage…. We would like to place our production studios at your service, to make a series of 120 digital programs contrasting our music with that of the rest of the world, in your wonderful trademark style. Your first program on the series will have a minimum 3 million viewers and a large percent of the royalties; from there we will include the program on our networks throughout China, Singapore and Taiwan.” Morocco “Today, most of us can no longer get our own country’s music on our own country’s media networks. If my parents or grandparents want to enjoy hearing the sounds and instruments from our own rich cultural heritage, they must find an old recording at the library or at the bazaar. This is not right. If you will come to my county and launch a network of wonderful content from not only our own culture but many, many others, we will provide hundreds of people to help you, overnight. We find this situation really heartbreaking because our music was our spiritual food”. |
